Agate: material & care guide
What it is
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, made of very small quartz crystals. Bands can differ in color, translucence and pattern. A polished slice shows the layers differently from a round bead or a carving. Read color-treatment information and look at photographs of the actual piece when comparing examples.
Material and design notes
Compare the listed material, color and surface finish in the product photographs. Check dimensions, construction and care notes for the individual piece before choosing.
Everyday wearing and placement
A small bead strand gives repeated patterns along the wrist; a pendant offers one larger view of the banding. Keep a polished object in a soft compartment between uses.
Choose size and construction
Compare bead diameter, pendant thickness and the balance of bands. Pair a vivid agate with a plain cord or quiet metal so its pattern remains the focus. For a bracelet, measure your wrist and compare it with the stated fit range. For a pendant, compare chain length with a necklace you already enjoy, then check the full charm height including its bail. A ring needs the intended finger’s measurement and attention to band width. Use the size hub for the measuring steps and the care guide for a mixed-material piece. Read the chalcedony guide when combining materials.
Care
Use gentle care suited to disclosed treatments and the whole construction. Protect polished edges from knocks, keep harsh cleaners away from cord and plating, and store pieces separately.
Material and design notes
Explore the related guides and available pieces below. Compare material wording, dimensions, fastening and finish together, and keep one or two favorite designs open to see how their proportions differ. For a gift, begin with the recipient’s regular style and actual measurements, then include a short note about the occasion. The Lab can help clarify a missing construction or measurement detail before ordering.
