Silver: material & care guide
What it is
Silver in a jewelry description may refer to a specified silver alloy or a silver surface over another metal. Sterling silver contains 92.5 percent silver and is often described as 925. Read the complete construction, including a chain, clasp and posts, when comparing the material and its care.
Material and design notes
A cool silver palette is a familiar choice for a family gift, an everyday pendant or a symbolic motif. The design and occasion can express Love, continuity or a calm personal style.
Everyday wearing and placement
Give a regularly worn piece a dry resting place after use. A simple chain can hold different pendants, provided its connection and weight suit each one.
Choose size and construction
Compare the stated alloy, plating and intentional dark finish. Check chain length, link thickness and clasp type alongside the dimensions of the pendant. For a bracelet, measure your wrist and compare it with the stated fit range. For a pendant, compare chain length with a necklace you already enjoy, then check the full charm height including its bail. A ring needs the intended finger’s measurement and attention to band width. Use the size hub for the measuring steps and the care guide for a mixed-material piece. Read the sterling silver guide when combining materials.
Care
The Canadian Conservation Institute explains how polishing can remove surface material. Start gently and protect plated, gilded and intentionally darkened details from aggressive cleaning. Inspect joining rings and clasps routinely.

Compare material wording, dimensions, fastening and finish together, and keep one or two favorite designs open to see how their proportions differ. For a gift, begin with the recipient’s regular style and actual measurements, then include a short note about the occasion. The Lab can help clarify a missing construction or measurement detail before ordering.
