Obsidian: material & care guide
What it is
Obsidian is natural volcanic glass. Dark black material is familiar, while some varieties have bands, inclusions or optical effects described by their trade names. Read the particular material description rather than relying on color alone when comparing obsidian with another smooth dark bead.
Material and design notes
Compare the listed material, color and surface finish in the product photographs. Check dimensions, construction and care notes for the individual piece before choosing.
Everyday wearing and placement
A polished pendant or bead strand gives a quiet reflective surface. Keep a handheld object over a soft surface and place a home carving where it can be lifted safely.
Choose size and construction
Compare polish, bead size and the stated dimensions of a carving. A pale accent creates contrast; a single dark strand is understated. For a bracelet, measure your wrist and compare it with the stated fit range. For a pendant, compare chain length with a necklace you already enjoy, then check the full charm height including its bail. A ring needs the intended finger’s measurement and attention to band width. Use the size hub for the measuring steps and the care guide for a mixed-material piece. Read the black obsidian guide when combining materials.
Care
Protect glassy material from sharp blows and keep chipped pieces out of use until assessed. Wipe gently, follow the listing’s treatment notes and inspect cords around heavy focal pieces.
Material and design notes
Explore the related guides and available pieces below. Compare material wording, dimensions, fastening and finish together, and keep one or two favorite designs open to see how their proportions differ. For a gift, begin with the recipient’s regular style and actual measurements, then include a short note about the occasion. The Lab can help clarify a missing construction or measurement detail before ordering.
