Necklace length guide
Use string to follow the route you want the necklace to take, then measure the string. Where a length sits depends on neck size, body shape, clothing and pendant weight. The descriptions below are reference points, not guaranteed positions.
| Length | Common reference point | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| 40 cm / 15.7 in | Near the base of the neck | Allow enough movement; measure rather than assuming a fit |
| 45 cm / 17.7 in | Around the collarbone for many wearers | Include any pendant drop when planning the look |
| 50 cm / 19.7 in | Below the collarbone for many wearers | Compare with your neckline |
| 60 cm / 23.6 in | A longer chest-length style | Check whether the pendant can turn or catch on clothing |
Extenders and pendants
A listed chain length may exclude its extender or pendant. Read the dimensions carefully. An extender changes the usable length; a large pendant changes the visible drop and feel. If those details are not clear, ask before ordering.
Layering
Try two strings at your preferred lengths to check the space between them. Different chain thicknesses and pendants can tangle even when their lengths differ. Remove necklaces before sleep and avoid pulling or wearing them where they might catch.
Choose a clasp you can manage
A delicate clasp, a sliding cord and an over-the-head strand suit different preferences. Check closure type and opening size as well as total length. For a gift, an adjustable length can help only when the range is appropriate for the recipient.
